NS enhances workplace safety by focusing on leading indicators of safety processes, such as employee attitudes, the quality of safety checkups, and job safety briefings.
In 2015, the Enola Diesel Shop became the first Norfolk Southern work group to achieve two million consecutive employee hours of reportable injury-free service.
NS promotes public safety through its “Train your Brain” safety outreach program. As campaign ambassador, Brainy makes public appearances urging motorists and pedestrians to be safe and smart around railroad tracks and crossings. In 2015, NS helped train more than 4,800 local emergency responders in 18 states to help their communities better prepare for potential incidents involving transport of hazardous materials.

In 2015, NS completed its Trees and Trains project, a five-year, $5.6 million initiative to reforest 10,000 acres with more than six million native hardwoods and cottonwoods in the Mississippi Delta.
NS donated a conservation easement to permanently protect more than 12,400 acres at its Brosnan Forest property near Charleston, S.C.
Over five years, from 2010 through 2015, NS reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 8.5 percent per revenue ton-mile of freight.
NS introduced a new class of low-emission Eco locomotives, which were developed through NS’ unique rebuild program that recycles older locomotives and upgrades engines to maximize fuel economy and emissions reduction.
NS rolled out the “Sleeper,” a new plug-in engine-heating system that eliminates unnecessary locomotive idling and diesel emissions in cold weather.
NS has been an American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care partner since 1996 and led development of the rail industry third-party certification protocol.
