What is Title 24

In 1978, the California Building Standards Commission in cooperation with the Department of Energy, created the residential building energy efficiency standards also known as Title 24.

The standards are updated in a cycle of 3 years. It contains regulations that govern the system design, building construction and installation of Fenestration Products among others, with the goal of achieving higher energy efficiency that will reduce California’s energy consumption.

U-Factor & SHGC in Fenestration Products

U-factor is the overall coefficient of thermal transmittance of a fenestration, wall, floor or roof/celling component in BTU/hr x ft² x ^oF, including air film resistance at both surfaces.

SHGC or Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is the ratio of the solar heat gain entering the space through the fenestration area to the incident solar radiation. Solar heat gain includes directly transmitted solar heat and absorbed solar radiation, which is then reradiated, conducted, or convected into the space.

U-factor and SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) are two indicators of energy efficiency for manufactured fenestration products. Fenestration products are submitted to NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) and performs tests in accordance to NFRC 100 for U-factors and NFRC 200 for SHGC.
