I am a recent graduate from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in Special Education. I learned about the wheelchair heart /3E Love when I received a few things while at the Best Buddies International Leadership Conference in July 2011. After the conference, I did some research to see what 3E Love really stood for. Ever since then the symbol and the 3 E’s have been a prominent reminder of my motivation as a teacher. Society is so use to seeing the wheelchair handicapped sign in parking lots, restrooms, and other public places; as for me, every time I see the regular symbol, I think it looks like it’s missing something—the heart. I cannot keep track of how many times I have been asked “What’s that wheelchair window decal on your car that looks like part of a heart?” My reply: “Well… it’s exactly what you said.” Individuals with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities have a huge piece of my heart. I carry them with me where ever I go, and my life has changed completely since I’ve started working with this population. I am taking the steps to educate my family, friends, and community about 3E Love and the amazing message that it is sending. One day everyone will know about the wheelchair heart. When that happens, instead of being asked what my car decal is, I will be asked where I bought it. To me, the wheelchair heart is not a symbol that recognizes one’s disabilities. To me, the wheelchair heart recognizes the miraculous abilities that make those individuals special and unique from everyone else. To me, my heart is a part of that wheelchair.
