"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." Antoine de Saint-Exupery - "The Little Prince". These are not my words. These are the words of a fox. A wild fox made tame by a mysterious and lonely little boy, on an journey to find friends and a greater understanding of life. That is what my son has done for me. He has touched me. He has tamed my wild heart. He has transformed the outlook and emotional landscape of our family. We are better people. We are better human beings. Everyday, he greets the world with love and an open heart. He moves through the world under the great power and momentum of his personality. His movements are graceful and smooth but he moves with grace. His thoughts are not expressed with fluidity and ease but he is consumed with a desire to be understood, to be loved and to be accepted. The symbol of Wheelchair Heart stands as testament of the dream and desire of all who are perceived and broken and less than: I am so much more than what I look like on the outside. All of humanity is given to each other to move through this life and this world to understand and connect. To be simply tolerant of another person will never bring about the social changes that are necessary to bring about equality and acceptance of those who are perceived as being "other". We must seek to UNDERSTAND. It is only through understanding that which is mysterious to us that we can live with love, justice, acceptance and true community for all. Our life includes disability but it is not defined by it. It is defined by the spirit of love. It is that spirit that transforms any daily struggles into opportunities to grow, to succeed and to live fully. It's not always easy or pretty but as long as there is love, life is good.
