What have you learned from dogs?
I learn daily from dogs how to be a better person.
Every dog has so many positive traits that only the very best humans possess. Dogs do not discriminate. They are incapable of meanness, prejudice, or cruelty. In a person, these would be the attributes of the perfect friend.
Dogs are our helpers and healers. Some of them help and heal as guide dogs or therapy dogs but all dogs have an innate ability to calm and comfort us with their presence.
Whereas humans over complicate things and focus too much on material things, or dwell on the past, or worry needlessly about the future, dogs enjoy a simpler, purer approach to life and live in the now. We should all try to "be more dog".
There is a saying "You have never really lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you."
If you bring a dog into your home, you owe him food and water, comfort, companionship, exercise, kindness and a home for life. Your dog owes you nothing in return; after all, he did not ask for his species as a whole to be domesticated, and he as an individual did not ask to be brought into your household, a place in which human rules are law, even though those rules don't make much sense to a dog.
But even though he owes you nothing, your dog will give you so much more than any "payment" could add up to. He will give you unconditional love, devotion, loyalty and trust. He will make you laugh, be a comfort when you are sad, enrich your life in so many ways. Having a dog in your family will help your children to learn responsibility, patience and compassion. If every person you knew gave up on you, your dog would still stick loyally by your side. Even dogs who are not treated well will most likely give their (undeserving) owners these things.
All dogs provide us with so many opportunities to enrich our lives. They have the potential to give us so much. Too many people waste their dogs' potential and set them up to fail - by mistreating them, not training them, chaining them up all day every day, discriminating against a dog because of his breed and so on.
We owe it to dogs and ourselves to give them the best lives we can. In doing so we set up our dogs to succeed and to thrive, and the reward is that they will be the best friends we could wish for.
I have learned a lot from dogs. From my volunteer work at APL, I have learned that there are too many homeless dogs. It is better to adopt one than to buy one from a breeder.
It is important to spay and neuter your pets so they won’t have puppies and it’s better for their health. I have also learned how to take care of dogs. They need medicine so they don’t get fleas or heart worms. They should not live outside on a chain.
I have also learned about pit bulls. They are not mean. They are just a type of dog. Some pit bulls are trained by people to fight and be mean. Even fighting dogs can be taught to become therapy dogs, like Puddin.
Dogs are nice to everyone and people should be like that too. Dogs are very smart. You can train dogs to do tricks, or become service dogs.
Some towns have BSL which means dogs like pit bulls can’t live there, like Denver. People who don’t know about pit bulls shouldn’t say bad things about them.
Shelter dogs are awesome because they are very nice, cute and they need homes. Some people surrender their dogs to the shelter because they don’t want them anymore, and I hate that. I like to help them find new homes. I have learned that when you help dogs, it makes them happy and they will always be your friend.
I like helping dogs because they can’t help themselves. I am their voice.

"What have you learned from dogs?" I have learned that true forgiveness exists. I have learned that unconditional love is very real. I have learned that there are some mistakes that get made repeatedly which must be accepted and dealt with as they come. I have learned that my family can be protected by a creature who doesn't share our language but knows us better than anyone. I have learned to tolerate noise and activity that I would ordinarily deem annoying, but have come to recognize as gifts of love. I have learned that my children can be gentle and respectful, if not often toward people. I have learned that I am a "dog person" because every picture my friend Rutledge posts about a sweet doggie needing help makes me cry and wish I could be the one. I have learned that my house may as well be empty if there is not a dog in it.
I thought I could resist him. At my age, a woman should know better. I had been there, done that and then some.
He was always there for me-through laughter and tears, through good times and bad. I only had to call and he would be at my side. He meant at lot to me-he had done a lot for me-but what he was asking for was just too much.
He said nothing-but his eyes said it all-How could you?
There was no way I was giving in. I determinedly ignored him and daintily nibbled at my Subway sandwich. Words were not required-the silence between us said it all-it was over-thats it-over! I could not agree to his request.
How dare he-how dare he?! Indignation built in me- I turned to him to give him a piece of my mind. I wish I hadn’t. His eyes, irresistible at the best of times, he gave me a soulful look that would have melted ice in the Arctic.
With a sigh, I gave in. 25 years of marriage and two grown up sons –one would have thought I knew better. But sadness hath no equal like Blizzard denied a Subway!!!!!!!!
With a dramatic sigh-I handed over my well earned Subway-and was rewarded with a tail that wagged all the way from here to Subway (read doggie) heaven!
Win a Gondola Boat Ride with Puddin' Pops!
Winner agrees to allow Puddin's Pittie Palace to reproduce the winning essay, and to post photos of the Gondola trip on Puddin's Pittie Palace information.
Puddin's Pittie Palace is holding an Essay contest! The Question is "What have you learned from Dogs?"
The winner will win a Gondola ride (An Italian Boat with Singers!) with Puddin' in Indianapolis, IN on Sunday Aug 17th @ 4pm.
Puddin' is a 13 yr old Therapy Dog that was rescued in 2010 from the OH200 Dog Fighting Bust as it is commonly known. He lives in a home with 6 other dogs and 2 cats, and loves life!
Last Spring Puddin' was diagnosed with cancer, and we decided to start a Bucket List for him and one of the items was a boat ride. His Auntie Bea decided Puddin' needed his "OWN" Gondola to ride in, and Puddin' decided he'd like to share it with people. That's why we're holding the contest. Puddin' has taught me a lot about life, dogs, and giving back. He is the sweetest dog I think I have ever known and only wants to spread peace wherever he goes.
The winner of the contest will be chosen by his Auntie Bea and Auntie Savannah. The winner will be notified by email, and the winning Essay will be featured on Puddin's Facebook Page Puddin's Pittie Palace.
Contest ends at midnight on Sun 8/10/14.
